Permaculture 101: Beginning Concepts

October 29, 2013

Picture1 (2)Greetings, all! We’re gearing up for a series of introductory Permaculture classes slated for weekends in November here at Wolfscratch Farm. Perhaps your curiosity has been piqued in the past if you’ve already heard this term, or maybe this post has offered your first exposure to the concept. Whatever your level of acquaintance with this portmanteau of “permanent agriculture”, allow us to provide you with a good foundation for living, producing, and interacting more sustainably with the natural world around you while reaping bountiful yields from your food production systems.

A basic premise of Permaculture is learning to work with nature rather than against it, the latter of which is all too often the case in our modern industrial food system. By using Permaculture practices to consciously design ecologically sound agricultural systems that mimic essential symbiotic relationships observed in nature, we are not only able to produce our own food without the negative consequences of chemical pest management and the use of synthetic fertilizers, but we are even able to enrich our environment by increasing biodiversity and soil fertility.

Under the tuition of Jamie Rosenthal, owner of Wolfscratch farm, and Derek Pinson, Certified Permaculture Designer, you’ll receive a wealth of information to introduce you to the basic ethics, principles, and practices of Permaculture while having the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned on the landscape, an experience paramount to the learning process. You’ll get your hands dirty while sheet mulching, planting guilds, building hügelkultur beds, and lots more!

Our affordable classes will be taking place over three weekends in November (see below for dates), and you are free to attend one, two, or all. A 30% discount will be available to those attending all three weekends. If you wish to attend only one class, we suggest you choose the weekend that will cover concepts of most interest to you. These concepts to be covered and pricing are also found on the schedule below. Additionally, depending on time availability, we welcome any suggestions if you have a particular interest in a topic not listed on the schedule!

If you’d like to sign up, please fill out and submit the form at the bottom of this post.  Questions? Shoot us an email at or give Jamie at call at (770) 617-8403. We hope to see you there!

Hi, Mary! We hope you can, too. 🙂 Remember that you don’t have to attend all three weekends if that won’t be possible. Whatever works best for you!
