Cob Construction & Rocket Mass Heater Workshop

November 17, 2013

ImageGreetings, all! For quite some time now, we’ve had plans to construct our very own rocket mass heater in the greenhouse to help keep our starts warm when we begin propagation in January. This is an easily constructed, super-efficient, high-heat variation of a wood burning stove that is quickly gaining popularity in the world of permaculture and sustainable living. To learn more, please visit this wonderfully comprehensive article: http://www.richsoil.com/rocket-stove-mass-heater.jsp. Image

It seems we’ll finally get underway with construction at the end of this month, and we would love for you to join us for the experience and to learn how to construct both cob and a simple rocket mass heater! On Saturday, November 30th and Sunday, December 1st, we’ll be making cob (an earthen building material consisting of clay, sand, and straw) to encase the inner-workings of our rocket mass heater and to create a thermal mass bench for radiating heat into our greenhouse for extended periods. We’ll be making multiple batches of cob on both days, so feel free to join us only one day or all weekend! Either way, you’ll have the chance to stomp around in some mud and get your hands dirty as we build our heater. We encourage a $25 donation for one day or $40 donation for both, but can work with anyone unable to pay.  You are welcome to camp on the farm if you plan to stay all weekend. Also, don’t forget to pack a lunch! Please give us a little info below if you’d like to attend. We’ll get back to you with a confirmation ASAP! Thanks and hope to see you there!

UPDATE: We’re planning for a potluck lunch on both days, so please bring your favorite side dish if you’re attending. Those that will be coming both days need only bring one dish. Thanks!

Hi, trying to convince hubby this would be something we should do. He is looking for another job and we are “no spend” currently. Could we just come to help? Thanks! Mary Norris

Hi, Mary! Of course! We’d love to have you. Perhaps you could bring along a side dish to share with the group? We’re thinking of having a potluck lunch or dinner.
